Shirley Ann Caesar-Williams, commonly known as Shirley Caesar, is an American recording artist, author, Gospel music singer, songwriter, and Pastor. Ann was born on October 13, 1938, in Durham, North Carolina, United States.
Pastor Caesar is a former Shaw University graduate, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. The star has honorary doctorates from Shaw University and Southeastern University. Moreover, she is also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
Pastor Caesar started singing at the age of 10 and has written over forty albums, exploring her gift and spreading words of faith. At an early age, she joined the Caravans; Albertina Walker, Delores Washington, Dorothy Norwood, Inez Andrews, and James Cleveland, and she sang and recorded with them from 1958 until 1966. She then began pursuing a call to ministry and solo singing career. Over the past years, she continued to link scripture, sermon and contemporary issues with the traditional gospel.
Pastor Caesar has played a song for every President since Jimmy Carter. Moreover, she has performed with such performers as Patti Labelle, Kim Burrell, John P. Kee, Whitney Houston, Dottie People, Gladys Knight, Tonex, Tramaine Hawkins, Destiny’s Child’s Michelle Williams, Kirk Franklin, and Andrea Crouch among many others.
For over 38 years, she has run an Outreach Ministry the bears her name. Her Outreach Ministry helps the neglected and those in need in the society. She often notes that “I cannot sweeten the Atlantic Ocean, but I can take a pitcher out of the ocean and sweeten that.” It was Pastor Caesar’s simple beginnings and her mother’s reassuring words that have influenced her determination to give so selflessly of herself. She says that “Mom often made it very clear to me that the people depended on me and she said, “I depend on you, and God depends on you.” Don’t let us down. Don’t you ever go out there and sing one thing and live something else”. That always stayed with me, not since Momma said it but it’s because when you finally get the greatest One who is The Lord Jesus Christ in your life, then from that point He makes a significant difference. Just the very fact that my Momma would always say that to me and made a great impact upon my life”.
