He rose to fame in mid-1985 after he won the Star Search competition for best stand-up comic, defeating Sinbad. he portrayed the voice of Crypt Keeper in Tales from the Crypt, but he has also done voice-over work for anime, video games, and other productions.
Furthermore, in the video games X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2, he also voiced the mercenary Deadpool, as well as Sauron and Pyro, two other well-known characters. In 1987, John appeared in the very first advertisement for Nintendo’s iconic video game series, The Legend of Zelda, which was released in the United States.
