Robert started working for the Federal Trade Commission in 1979 when then-President Jimmy Carter selected him as Director of the Policy Planning Staff.

In the later years, Robert resolved to make a profession out of teaching and enlisted at Harvard University. In there, Reich became a professor at the John F. Kennedy School of Government.
