About John F Kennedy International Airport

JFK Airport started commercial operations in the year 1948 as Idlewild Airport. It was in the early 1963 that the airport was rededicated in memory of the former president John F Kennedy. It is today America’s most busiest airport and one of the 20th in the world. The airport is operated by The Port Authority of New York City and New Jersey and contributes about $30 billion to the New York/New Jersey region economy. JFK has seven terminals and employs some 35,000 people. JFK is one of the world’s leading international air cargo centers. The airport connects to some 159 cities. In 2010, the airport served some 46 million passengers. As a matter of fact, over ninety airlines operate out of JFK. The airport is a hub for American Airlines and Delta Air Lines, among others.

Some of the major airlines operating from the airport include Aer Lingus, Aeroflot, Japan Airlines, Korean Air, Qantas, Air China, Air France, Air India, ANA, Alitalia, American Airlines, American Eagle, Asiana Airlines, Austrian Airlines, British Airways, China Airlines, Cathay Pacific, China Airlines, Delta Air Lines, EgyptAir, Finnair, Emirates, Etihad, Iberia, Lufthansa, Qatar, Royal Jordanian, Swiss Airlines, TAM, Turkish, United Airlines, US Airways, Virgin America and Virgin Atlantic.

AirTrain

AirTrain is an advanced railway system that serves JFK Airport and connects all the airport terminals and parking lots with the Long Island Rail Road and also the New York City subway lines in Queens. AirTrain service operates 24 hours a day and is affordable, easy to use, and wheelchair-accessible. Three overlapping tracks are available: the Howard Beach route, Jamaica Station track, and All Terminals loop. Passengers can also travel the AirTrain for free around the airport but must pay if entering or exiting at off-airport AirTrain stations. For additional information, visit the Airtrain website.

Amtrak Connections

Amtrak is found at Penn Station. Total travel time through public transportation is approximately 47 minutes. The NYC Airport Shuttle service presents connections, and of course, you can hire a taxi but plan for at least 1 hour of travel time.
