JFK Airport started commercial operations in the year 1948 as Idlewild Airport. It was in the early 1963 that the airport was rededicated in memory of the former president John F Kennedy. The airport is operated by The Port Authority of New York City and New Jersey and contributes about $30 billion to the New York/New Jersey region economy. Three overlapping tracks are available: the Howard Beach route, Jamaica Station track, and All Terminals loop. Passengers can also travel the AirTrain for free around the airport but must pay if entering or exiting at off-airport AirTrain stations. For additional information, visit the Airtrain website.
